Battelle Memorial Institute (more widely known as simply Battelle) is a private nonprofit applied science and technology development company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.
A former employee mentioned, "I feel very disappointed that tons of American companies are unfriendly to international students. Battelle is one of them."
Temporary Field Technician (Former Employee) says"No room for growth if you are not friends with supervisors. I was a temp without benefits for 3 years. They ended up cancelling my contract without explanations or notice supposedly because I was not "insurable by the company". They never stated there were parameters to be "insurable" during the 3 years I worked there, neither were able to explain them at termination. They are disrespectful to the hard work of their employees, and are extremely unprofessional by not giving reasons to fire someone after three years."
Anatomic Pathology Technician (Current Employee) says"The trick to staying employed is to survive your 90 day probation period. Be careful of what you say bc it'll show up on your review word for word. High turnover."
Database Administrator (Former Employee) says"When I started back in 1978 it was a fabulous place to work. Projects were very interesting and management was very supportive. Toward the end of my tenure working conditions deteriorated dramatically in a company run by contractors . Management was only interested in cutting costs and did little to bring in new contracts.Clean facilities.Long hours."
Job Seeker (Former Employee) says"I feel very disappointed that tons of American companies are unfriendly to international students. Battelle is one of them."
data collector (Former Employee) says"I was hired by this company. Received all the paperwork, id number and etc. Why did they tell me after 2 months of waiting I didnt pass my background check? Then when I questioned it, the staff told me I would receive a letter stating why. I never received it. Nor would I ever recommended a shady company like this to anyone. I have passed many background checks with previous employers. Extremely unprofessional."
Research Scientist (Current Employee) says"company is attempting to increase employee satisfaction but is so behind industry standard that the processes is years from completion. Management is not supportive.somewhat flexible hoursunderstaffed so hours are long"
Lab Technician (Current Employee) says"No tuition reimbursement. HR is worthless and buys into the back stabbing retaliatory culture. No sense of direction, totally worthless training, lied to about raises and compensation."
Supervisor (Former Employee) says"Management was atrocious it's the good ol boy system at it's worst. Management don't know there role as managers. Company is constantly changing policy to further take away employee benefits.paymanagement, benefits, schedule"
Research Scientist (Former Employee) says"I know a lot of people that work for Battelle at other national labs or on other contracts that are very happy, but they took over the contract I was on and treated us horribly. The benefits are completely trash, no where near what the rest of the industry provides. The managers they brought would lie and throw anyone under the bus they could. No response to issues at all. When I had a problem with my pay check, every manager and payroll person I talked to agreed I wasn't paid correctly, but no one wanted to/knew how fix the issue.lack of benefits, unresponsive unreliable managers"
Duplication and Mail Service Assistant (Former Employee) says"These people I worked with talked about everyone that came in the room along with talking about the manager, they were not very forgiving in the training and expected you to get it like right now but there was so much to learn and so little time to learn it. at least 50 new machines and 3 soft wares, it was very challenging."
Histology Technician (Former Employee) says"People were very cliquish. They didn’t work as a team. Some would only do one or two things, rarely pitched in to help each other. I was there a year and left as soon as I could find another job.The pay was low to and was pretty much a burn and turn atmosphere.Good work hoursBurn and turn atmosphere. Didn’t care about keeping good people."
Corporate Science and Technology Program Director (Current Employee) says"Battelle could be a fantastic place to work. The leadership is missing an opportunity to benefit from the great minds and talented people who still work there. They are so focus on near term financial goals that they are mortgaging the future.Laid back, flexible hours, smart peoplemyopic focus on the bottom line, very low interest in innovation"
Principal Research Scientist (Current Employee) says"I can only believe that all the glowing reviews here must have been written by Battelle upper managment, or at the direction of upper managment, because at my office everyone is supressed and fearful. Under new CEO Jerf Wadsworth, Battelle over the last 2 yrs has: Fired/RIF'd many many employees, with the exception of upper management of course Begun a campaign of crackdowns on minor policy or guideline infractions so that they will have reasons to fire you if they so choose Eliminated or drastically reduced benefits including vaca/sick leave, holidays, incentive bonuses, pensions, and 401K Increased the already massive maze of policies, rules, and procedures to the point where they are a very real hinderence to work Replaced a culture of cooperation, innovation, and mutual support with one of authoritarian rule, fear, and mistrust Battelle has gone from first to worst on my resume.Interesting work sometimesSee comments"
Mechanical Engineer (Current Employee) says"Battelle is involved in a variety of projects. Some of which are very technical and push the boundaries of science. Problem right now is that management has basically run the company into the ground. I would not recommend pursuing employment with Battelle.fun workno company direction or leadership."
Administrative Assistant III (Former Employee) says"Company & management did absolutely nothing to address my complaints of being bullied for nearly 1 year, including Diversity & Inclusion, Workplace Concerns or HR. There was no investigation, the published harassment policy was not followed. It was, however, revised and the bullying continued, worsened and increased to include retaliation each time I attempted to get someone to address the issue."
Admin (Former Employee) says"There isn't any job security at this company, they RIF over 200 personnel in a matter of a few months. I gave up an excellent paying job with wonderful benefits and a tranquil work place to come to this company. Advancement won’t happen unless you get in good with the boss and the Vice President of you area, no matter how hard you work. Absolutely no availability for advance training, the same people always get chosen to attend all off site training. While employed there I put up with work place harassment, bullying, violence, and was treated unfairly. I had things thrown at me and fist in my face because I told the truth. Management has much to be desired as you can't put any trust into you immediate supervisor or fellow co-workers as they will gratefully stab you in the back. You are prohibited from using your chain to resolve issues when they can't be resolved at a much lower level. If you move beyond your immediate supervisor then you have to deal with the reprisal. This company is family oriented as they seem to have several members of the same family employed within the same location, this makes it difficult to elevate issues since it seems family members are over other family members. If you aren't part of the 'in' crowd you will never do enough work nor will it be good enough when completed. They condone work place harassment, bullying, violence and unfair treatment of employees.they have an onsite gymdisregard work place bullying, harassment, violence and unfair treatment of employees."
Animal Technician (Former Employee) says"I was recently hired in December of 2017 and from the start people were telling me employment as like entering The Hunger Games. This turned out to be true since less than 3 months later there was an unexpected massive layoff of 15% of their staff in Ohio alone. Anyone that had been there 3 years or less OR had been there 'too long' was let go. The overall attitude of those working there was not positive but this may be due to the fact people didn't have any confidence in their job security. I would not recommend working for this company unless you want to question whether or not you'll have a job on a weekly basis.Salary, benefits, Pto, relaxed enviormentLack of job security, negative overall attitude, less than trustworthy management"
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) says"Reduction in force - created a stressful environment. New company structure causing the elimination of jobs from mid management to admin assistants since 2015.paid days offstressful"
Instructional Designer (Former Employee) says"Did not like it. don't buy into the hype. Let down by the manager, nothing I did was right. Made a lot of changes to documents that could have be done correctly if instructed in the beginning. Thumbs down."
Sr Account Payable (Former Employee) says"Don’t work for the Accounting department. Discrimination they are extremely behind on work. Poor training. Toxic department and negative environment.NoneEverything"
